The Loudness War: why 'louder' no longer wins, and how to restore dynamics

For decades, mastering engineers made tracks louder and louder. The logic was simple: on the radio and in a playlist, a louder track jumps out and seems better. That started the loudness war — a race that sacrificed dynamics for a few extra decibels. Tracks were limited into a "brickwall": a solid wall of sound pinned to the ceiling, with no impact and no air.

In the streaming era, that logic stopped working. Here is why.

Loudness normalization changed everything

Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube, Tidal, and others apply loudness normalization: they bring every track to one playback level (about −14 LUFS on Spotify, −16 on Apple Music). That means:

  • Made your master louder than the target? The platform will turn it down on playback.
  • Made it quieter? The platform will (within reason) bring it up.

The result: "louder" no longer gives a loudness advantage — everyone plays at the same level. But an over-compressed track keeps the downside: crushed dynamics, a flat, fatiguing sound. You paid for loudness with dynamics — and didn't even get the loudness.

Crest factor is what you actually hear

Crest factor (or PLR, peak-to-loudness ratio) is the difference between the signal's peak and its average loudness. It is what gives the sense of "impact" and "life":

  • High crest factor — drums hit, the track breathes, it doesn't tire you.
  • Low crest factor (brickwall) — everything is pinned to the ceiling, the sound is flat and fatiguing within minutes.

When two tracks play at the same loudness (thanks to normalization), the one with preserved dynamics wins — it sounds bigger and more pleasant. The loudness war is effectively lost: dynamics win.

How to master in the normalization era

  1. Aim for the platform's level, not the maximum. −14 LUFS integrated, True Peak ≤ −1 dBTP is a safe reference where a track is neither turned down nor clipped. See What is LUFS.
  2. Protect the transients. Don't limit into a flat wall — leave the impact in the drums and the attack in the instruments.
  3. Check crest factor and peaks. The free LUFS analyzer shows integrated loudness, True Peak, and peak headroom.

What if the track is already over-compressed?

A common case: the source is already a brickwall — an old loudness-war master, or a track from an AI generator (Suno, Udio) that outputs pinned to the ceiling. What a limiter clipped cannot be recovered — that is the honest limit. But perceived punch can be restored: re-emphasize the transients and lift the crest factor.
