What to check before exporting to 16-bit

Bit depth is about file format, not about loudness or dynamics. Before you deliver a master, it's worth reading three measurements:

  • True Peak — the true peak level per ITU-R BS.1770-5. This is what must sit below the ceiling (usually ≤ −1 dBTP), or you'll get clipping on peaks that no bit depth can hide.
  • LUFS — integrated loudness. Determines whether the track lands in a platform's target after normalization.
  • LRA — the dynamic range: how much the quiet and loud sections differ.

Why dithering matters specifically at 16-bit

This is the point people most often get wrong. When the signal goes from 32-bit float to 16-bit, a rounding error appears. On its own it's correlated with the signal — heard as distortion, not as smooth noise.

Dithering adds a very quiet noise that breaks that correlation: the error becomes an even, harmless hiss that the ear forgives far more readily. Two rules follow:

  1. Going down — dither. Float to 16-bit — always. The noise type shapes its spectrum: TPDF spreads it evenly across the band, noise-shaping variants push it into regions where the ear is less sensitive.
  2. Not going down — don't dither. Exporting to 24-bit from float needs no dithering: the error already sits at −144 dB, so adding noise only degrades the signal.

What result to expect — honestly

  • Noise floor around −93 dBFS. That's below the ambient floor of any real room and almost any signal path. On a finished master at normal levels, you won't hear the quantization noise.
