Camelot Wheel: Harmonic Mixing by Key, Explained
Classical notation — "F-sharp minor" — tells you nothing about what that track will mix with. The Camelot Wheel solves exactly that: it maps all twenty-four keys onto codes where compatibility is immediately visible.
A code is a number from 1 to 12 plus a letter: A for minor, B for major. A minor is 8A, C major is 8B.
The compatibility rule
Three cases blend smoothly:
- The same code. 8A with 8A — the same key, no conflict by definition.
- Adjacent number, same letter. 8A ↔ 7A and 8A ↔ 9A. This is a step around the circle of fifths: the keys differ by one accidental and share six notes out of seven.
- Same number, other letter. 8A ↔ 8B — relative minor and major. Identical note set, different tonal centre.
Everything else sounds harsher the further the numbers sit apart. 8A → 2A is six steps around the wheel, and it reads as a mistake rather than an effect.

Adjacent rows are adjacent numbers on the wheel — and 12 and 1 are neighbours too, because the circle closes.
Putting it to work
In a set list. List your tracks with their codes and build transitions by the rule above. Stepping "+1" repeatedly creates a sense of lift — each track slightly brighter than the last. Switching A→B on the same number changes the mood from minor to major without changing the harmonic base.
Picking samples. A melodic sample in 9A will sit on a beat in 8A. One in 3A will not. Faster than auditioning a library, and more reliable than trusting filenames.
Layering vocals. With a finished vocal in one key and a beat in another, the code shows how wide the gap is: adjacent number means transpose, distant number means find another beat.
What Camelot does not solve
Key compatibility is necessary, not sufficient. Two tracks in 8A can still clash on tempo, arrangement density or mood. And the reverse: experienced DJs deliberately take "incompatible" transitions where a hard break is the point.
One more subtlety: the code reflects the dominant key. A track with a modulation carries a single code but wanders elsewhere as it plays — mix it according to the section that actually sounds at the transition.
