Spotify Mastering Guide 2026: The Complete Walkthrough
Spotify Mastering Guide 2026: The Complete Walkthrough
Spotify's technical requirements
Spotify applies loudness normalization to every track. That means your track's loudness will be automatically adjusted to match the platform's target level.
Target parameters
| Parameter | Value | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Integrated LUFS | −14 LUFS | Target loudness |
| True Peak | ≤ −1.0 dBTP | Maximum peak |
| LRA | 5–15 LU | Dynamic range |
| Format | WAV 16-bit / FLAC | For distributor upload |
| Sample Rate | 44.1 kHz or 48 kHz | Standard |
How does Spotify's normalization work?
Loudness Normalization
Spotify measures your track's integrated LUFS and adjusts the loudness:
- If your track is −10 LUFS → Spotify turns it down by −4 dB → plays back at −14 LUFS
- If your track is −18 LUFS → Spotify turns it up by +4 dB → plays back at −14 LUFS
Why this matters
- Quiet tracks get boosted — if you master at −18 LUFS, Spotify adds +4 dB, which can push True Peak into clipping
- Loud tracks get pulled down — mastering at −8 LUFS gives you no advantage, only lost dynamics
- True Peak is critical — as loudness gets boosted, inter-sample peaks rise too
Optimal mastering settings for Spotify
Target loudness
Target LUFS: -14.0 LUFS
True Peak Ceiling: -1.0 dBTP
LRA: 6-12 LU (for most genres)
Why −14 LUFS?
- Matches Spotify's normalization — your track won't get boosted or pulled down
- Optimal dynamic range — enough headroom for transients
- Minimal distortion — the limiter works in a gentle range
Genre settings for Spotify
EDM / Electronic
Target LUFS: -10 to -8 LUFS (will be turned down to -14)
True Peak: -1.0 dBTP
Compression: hard (3-4:1 ratio)
Exciter: transistor / tape
Imager: 1.2-1.3
Note: EDM is often mastered louder than −14 LUFS for "density," but Spotify will pull it down to −14 anyway. It's better to master at −14 with dense compression from the start.
Pop / Rock
Target LUFS: -12 to -10 LUFS
True Peak: -1.0 dBTP
Compression: moderate (2-3:1 ratio)
Exciter: tape / tube
Imager: 1.1-1.15
Hip-Hop / R&B
Target LUFS: -10 to -8 LUFS
True Peak: -1.0 dBTP
Compression: moderate + parallel (30-40%)
Exciter: tape
Imager: 1.05-1.10
Jazz / Classical
Target LUFS: -18 to -16 LUFS
True Peak: -1.0 dBTP
Compression: minimal (1.5-2:1 ratio)
Exciter: off
Imager: 1.05
Podcast / Speech
Target LUFS: -16 LUFS
True Peak: -1.0 dBTP
Compression: hard (3-4:1 ratio) for intelligibility
De-esser: on (5-8 kHz)
Upload format
For your distributor (DistroKid, TuneCore, CDBaby)
Format: WAV 16-bit, 44.1 kHz
Or: FLAC 16-bit, 44.1 kHz
Why not MP3?
- Distributors transcode into each streaming platform's own format
- MP3 is already a lossy format, and re-compressing it degrades quality further
- WAV/FLAC are lossless, giving you the highest possible quality
Common mistakes
1. Mastering too loud
❌ -6 LUFS → Spotify turns it down 8 dB → lost dynamics
✅ -14 LUFS → Spotify leaves it alone → ideal playback
2. Ignoring True Peak
❌ -14 LUFS, True Peak +0.5 dBTP → clipping after normalization
✅ -14 LUFS, True Peak -1.0 dBTP → safe
3. Wrong format
❌ MP3 320kbps → re-compression → artifacts
✅ WAV 16-bit → distributor transcodes cleanly
4. Not checking on multiple devices
Check your master on:
- Headphones (the primary listening method)
- Phone speaker
- Car stereo (lower quality)
- Studio monitors (for control)
How to verify your master for Spotify
- Measure LUFS — use a LUFS Analyzer
- Check True Peak — should be ≤ -1.0 dBTP
- Listen on multiple devices — headphones, phone speaker, monitors
- Compare against a reference — pick a track in your genre on Spotify
Magic Master: automatic mastering for Spotify
Magic Master automatically sets up your parameters for streaming:
- −14 LUFS target for the "Standard" preset
- True Peak Limiter with a −1.0 dBTP ceiling
- 4x oversampling for accurate inter-sample peak measurement
- Adaptive, genre-based compression
- WAV 16-bit export with dithering
Basic mastering is free — 3 tracks a day, no card required. PRO modules run on tokens (1 token = 1 mastering); see Pricing for details.
