Why train your ears on frequencies

Hearing which band sticks out is what separates deliberate EQ work from turning knobs at random. An experienced engineer hears that a mix is boxy at 250 Hz or harsh at 3 kHz and knows exactly where to reach.

The skill only comes from practice: tonal memory develops like musical ear training — in short regular sessions rather than long rare ones.

What each band means

60–120 Hz is the weight and body of the kick, where the sense of low end lives. 200–400 Hz is the boxy zone: too much makes a mix muddy and cardboard-like. 800 Hz to 1.5 kHz carries vocal intelligibility and presence.

3–5 kHz gives attack and clarity but is also the main source of harshness: overdo it and ears tire within a minute. 8–12 kHz brings air and sheen, along with sibilance that a de-esser tames.

How to practise

Five minutes a day beats an hour once a week. Listen on the same headphones or monitors you work on — tying the skill to a familiar tonality matters more than the accuracy of the speakers.

Do not worry about missing neighbouring bands: confusing 2 and 3 kHz is normal even for professionals. The point is learning to tell regions apart, not naming the exact frequency.
